Japanese Judas tree sculpture in natabori (roughly cut) style
Carved by Yasumasa Yoshida

造仏の時に発する鑿音にも功徳があると言われ、わざと残した彫りあとはその音を視覚的に表したものである。

Japanese adherents to Buddhism believe that the sounds emitted during carving bring rewards to the witnesses. The horizontal lines also evoke the sounds of their carving to those who approach the statue.
The traces of chisels are left deliberately, the expression represents that Bodhisattva emerges from the tree. And the traces symbolize the sound of sculpting and bring blessings for us.
